School Year Programs

Room to Roam Outdoor Learning is an outdoor early childhood education program for 2.5 to 5 year olds in and around the Tricities area.  We are a roaming program in that we do not have a home base building. Instead we rotate among a variety of parks.  In this way we can offer a broad range of natural settings and experiences.  We work with the local Parks and are fully insured.

Locations: We will be visiting different parks throughout the year to give the children exposure to a diverse range of natural environments. We operate out of Lions Park, Chelsea Park, Wellington Park, Lafarge Lake and Glen Park.

Class Size:  Our teacher to student ratio is 1:6 and we run our programming with a small class size at a maximum of 12 students and 2 educators.  In this way each child can connect with our educators and be provided with the support they need.

Choice of days:  Your child can attend class either four, three or two days a week from Monday to Thursday.  Children who attend classes on a more frequent basis build trust and connection with educators more quickly, develop stronger social ties with their peers, building more meaningful friendships which aids in developing their social and emotional skills.  They experience overall improved consistency in their learning and development.

We generally follow the school year operating schedule and break in December for the Christmas holidays as well as spring break.

Registration for the upcoming 2023/24 school year is now open.  To register we require a non-refundable registration fee of $50 and a deposit equal to one month of fees.

We learn how to be safe while we are outside and how to work together and stay together.

What to wear and bring…  A complete list

Cold, wet weather

  • Rain coat and rain pants.
  • Rain boots – in cold weather rain boots with a warm liner or with neoprene (Kamiks or Bogs).
  • Warm under layers made of wool or polyester fleece.Use at least three layers in cold weather.  No cotton please.  Cotton gets wet and draws the warmth out of your body.
  • A toque that fits under a hood.No pom poms please. They are so cute but they don’t fit under a hood.
  • Warm, waterproof mittens.

Warm, dry weather

  • Brimmed sun hat.
  • Sunscreen already applied.
  • Closed toed shoes.
  • Long sleeved shirt and pants (cotton is ok in the warm, dry weather).
  • Extra sweater or hoodie.
  • Rain coat (can be kept in backpack or tied to the outside of pack).

What goes in the backpack?

Each child needs to come with a back pack that fits their body and can fit all the things they need.  It’s best to have a pack with a chest strap which helps the pack to fit comfortably throughout the day.  The pack should contain the following items:

  • Extra set of clothes (socks, underwear, pants, shirt) in a waterproof bag (ziplocks work great).
  • Diapers and wipes if necessary.
  • Water bottle.
  • Snack in a reusable container that your child can open and close.
  • A small cup for tea.
  • Whistle to hang on back pack (often these are built into the chest strap).

Note that educators do carry an extra set of clothing, sunscreen and hand warmers just in case.  Each child is expected to come appropriately dressed for the weather.
